In a thoughtful response to staff needs, NBT Library and Knowledge Service has partnered with several hospital teams at the Southmead site to repurpose an underused meeting pod into a dedicated prayer and reflection space. This initiative was born out of feedback from staff who found the main prayer room too distant to access during busy shifts.
The newly transformed pod, located within the library, offers a quiet, private environment for staff of all faiths—or none—to pause, reflect, and recharge. Designed with simplicity and serenity in mind, the space includes comfortable seating and minimal décor to encourage calm and contemplation.
This collaborative effort highlights the library’s evolving role as a responsive and inclusive space within the hospital. By working closely with Estates, Chaplaincy, and Staff Wellbeing teams, the library has helped create a meaningful resource that supports the emotional and spiritual wellbeing of hospital staff.
The space was officially opened in May 2025, with a short, inclusive ceremony, during which our resident chaplain offered prayers, and our resident imam recited the call to prayer. The event concluded with celebratory cake for all present.
