Alison Day, Senior Manager Knowledge and Library Services – NHS England

#AMillionDecisions is an ongoing initiative jointly led by HLG and the Knowledge and Library Services Team, NHS England. It calls for all decisions in the healthcare sector to be fully evidence-based, and for health service providers and commissioners to employ and make use of the expertise of librarians and knowledge specialists in meeting their obligations under The Health and Care Act 2022.
Every day, across the healthcare sector in England, more than a million decisions are made that have a profound and lasting impact on people’s lives and which influence the quality of healthcare and the cost of services.
Health librarians and knowledge specialists ensure that these decisions are based upon the best available evidence from research, best practice and encourage knowledge to be captured, shared and re-used.
Multiple benefits are possible for healthcare staff and organisations when they work closely with health librarians and knowledge specialists:
- Improving quality of care
- Improving patient outcomes
- Releasing clinician time for care
- Saving money
- Facilitating decision making
- Enabling change and innovation
- Improving understanding and knowledge
In each newsletter we would like to invite you to share your case studies about the impact of your work. Here are a couple of recent examples that are available within the Knowledge and Library Services Impact Case Studies Workspace on Future NHS.

Impact case studies, combined with quote cards from library champions, can be very powerful ways to advocate about the value of health knowledge and library services to senior stakeholders. Please share how you advocate for your service by getting in touch with alison.day25@nhs.net
You can use the Impact Toolkit to help inform how you gather impact and there are additional resources available on the HLG website to support your own use of #AMillionDecisions.
